"Reuben Pantier"

“I pass the effect of my father and mother;/ The milliners daughter made me trouble/ And out I went into the world” (lines 6-9). In Edgar Lee Masters's Spoon River Anthology, the died tell their stories. The poem “Reuben Pantier” is about a young man’s relationship with his old school teacher, Emily Sparks. Emily Sparks was the only one who cared and loved for him. He leaves Spoon River and is now in the Rue De Rivoli. He thinks about the mistakes he has made and thinks about how his teacher would always be there to help him stay out of trouble. Reuben Painter is depressed and sad because he has led a lonely and Pessimistic life. It has been filled with sadness and sorrow, because he had left his teacher and she was the only one who helped him stay away from trouble. Since Reuben had a abominable childhood he is dishearten. His parents were not the best parents in the world. They always fought and never had time for him. He lived mostly with his mother after she kick his father out (Due to his disgusting ness). For example she says, “In the man that fills you with disgust”. (Mrs. Benjamin Pantier, line 16) He was never home, so she gets aggravated. Reuben gets his characteristics from his parents. Due to Reuben for being a hellion he yearns for Emily Sparks. Reuben was described as “a devastating fire” by “Trainor”. (Trainor, The Druggist, line 10) Emily Sparks was the only one who cared for him and tried turning this “fire” into “nothing but light”! She always wonders about him after he left, wondering where he is. She shouts, “Where is my boy, my boy”. (Emily Sparks, line 1) She would pray for him, watch over him, and write to him. She wanted him to “Work for your soul’s sake”. (Emily Sparks, line 15) He was then lonely because nobody cared for him after he left. Reuben has been living a pessimistic life because he is lonely. He is lonely because no one cared for him except his teacher. Then he left his teacher when he left Spoon River. He is now out in the world.”Where I passed through every peril known” he describes his experience. (line 10) He cried one day for his teacher because he knows he was not doing what she wanted him to be doing in life. Reuben Pantier ended his life tragically missing his teacher (as did she). He was forced away out into the world and faced it on his own. That is why he became who he was and why he died his death.
